# Breaks

Time and Attendance Feature

This advanced [time and attendance](https://help.megabus.com.au/gtx/docs/time-and-attendance) feature is only available in **GTX 5.7.1** and later.

To **upgrade your system to the latest version**, please [contact the megabus support team](https://www.megabus.com.au/support).

**Marlin GTX**'s Break functionality enables users to block out periods on attendance schedules, as required.

Breaks can be associated with [schedules](/gtx/docs/schedules), and can be used to record and block out regular lunch breaks for [staff associated with that schedule](/gtx/docs/staff#associating-staff-with-schedules).

Breaks can be viewed and edited by selecting **Main > Staff > Manage Breaks** from the menu bar.

The **Break Maintenance** module will open, showing a list of breaks.

          Note

Breaks are only a guide and do not prevent bookings from being added to the blocked out periods for any associated staff, schedules or resources.

### Adding Breaks

#### System > System Files > People > Breaks

To add a new break, click on the **Add** button at the top of the Break Maintenance window.

The **Add Break** window will open, containing a form for adding a new break.

In the **Name** textbox, enter a name to identify the break within the GTX system.

Use the time fields below to set a **Start** and **End** time for each day, using 24-hour time values (e.g. for a 12pm-1pm break, set the Start time to 12:00 and the End time to 13:00).

Use the **Applies To** checkboxes to select which days the break applies to within its associated schedule (which will be selected in the following section),

Use the **Colour** picker at the bottom to select the colour the break times will appear as on the Attendance module grid.

To save the break and return to the Breaks list, click on the **Save** button at the top of the Add Break window.

The break can then be associated with various schedules using the **Schedules** tab.

          Note

Breaks can only be associated with Schedules, not Staff. This means that if you have multiple staff members working the same overall schedule (e.g. 9am-5pm) but who take breaks at different times (e.g. one at 12pm and another at 1pm), then a new schedule needs to be created with the required break added to it, which can then be associated with the appropriate staff members.

**Tip:** This can be done quickly using the **Clone** tool to clone the required schedule and then adding the breaks and staff members to it as necessary.

### Associating Breaks with Schedules

#### System > System Files > People > Breaks

Breaks can be associated with schedules by opening them in edit mode and clicking on the **Schedules** tab at the top of the module window.

The Schedules tab shows a list of schedules the break is associated with.

To associate the break with a new schedule, click on the **Add** button at the top of the Associated Schedules list.

A pop-up will open showing a list of Schedules within the GTX system.

Clicking on a schedule in the pop-up will add that schedule to the Associated Schedules list for that break.

To remove a break from a schedule, select it in the Associated Schedules list and click on the **Remove** button at the top of the list.
